Swing Into Spring with Eco-Friendly Furniture

When it comes to “greening” your home, you have to think outside the box. Yes, recycling plastics, changing your lighting and switching your cleaning products is very beneficial, but did you realize you can actually green your furniture and accessories too? Here are a few unique ways to green your indoor and outdoor furniture and send you on your way to an entirely eco-friendly living space.

If you’re like me, spring cleaning and updates are a must! March has spring cleaning updates penciled in on my calendar for weeks!  This year, I plan on updating my patio with replacement cushions and pillows, and if my budget allows me, my indoor toss pillows will be updated as well.

With all of this talk about “going green” and protecting the environment, I decided to do a little research on ways to break through the surface of just cleaning and actually buy eco-friendly furniture products and accessories.  Here is what I found:

The filling in cushion and pillow production is just as important as the fabric used in the design. I have always been a fan of Sunbrella fabric, and thankfully their fabric is 100% recyclable and green-guard certified, meaning I am confident that purchasing Sunbrella pillows and cushions promotes healthy air indoors and outdoors. At CushionSource.com, I found an entire 2011 spring collection of indoor and outdoor patterns that will look beautiful in my soon-to-be clean patio space.

Sunbrella Pillows on Teak Furniture

The BioComfort filling, used in cushions and pillows, is known for its eco-friendly filling. Prestige Fabricators manufacture BioComfort, a polyurethane foam, and is my top choice in cushion inserts because of the “green” chemicals used the in foam manufacturing. BioComfort foam is made from soy-based chemicals which is better for our air and approved for indoor air quality. Sunbrella and BioComfort are major contributors in eco-friendly products and are committed to healing and sustaining our air quality both indoors and out. I am happy to know my money goes toward someone who is committed to improving the environment like I am!

Eco-friendly Sunbrella Fabrics

Sunbrella’s fabric can be used for throw pillows, cushions and curtains. Their selction of fabrics is so large I am sure you will find a fabric to coordinate with your indoor and outdoor seating area. For my cushions, I will use the BioComfort filling so I know I am choosing the best cushion available from the inside out.

If you are looking for design ideas or need a push in the right direction, I have put together some of my top picks for spring eco-friendly fabrics. All of these can be used indoors and outdoors! What do you think?
